State Competition General Information

Back to State Competition

We would like to invite all Iowa High School cheerleaders to participate in our Cheerleading Championships. Championships take place on the first Saturday in November at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines. Here is some general information.

Additional, detailed information will be mailed to your school and posted on this website in August.

FORMS:
Numerous forms are necessary to register your squad for the competition. They include squad registration, parental consent, school information and medical release/treatment forms. The mailing deadline for the forms is September 30th. We would advise you to start early with the preparation of the forms as many school boards must approve the money disbursement before it can be mailed.

Remember the "first form" you must fill out is the membership form that is on this website as you cannot participate unless you belong to ICCA. Also, the coach of any school team that wishes to participate needs to attend a current spirit rules meeting. These will be held in August and September. Click here to see a list of dates.

SQUAD NUMBERS AND ELIGIBILITY:
Any bona fide cheerleader in your high school is eligible. This would not include someone who only cheers on an All-Star squad. Squads who like to stunt, dance, cheer and jump should enter one of the Cheer Dance divisions. This routine is up to 2 1/2 minutes of choreographed material (cheer and dance) which includes up to 90 seconds of music. There are two Cheer Dance divisions to pick from:

School Size Division or Open Divisions

School Size Division is determined by your school's basketball classification. Following are the divisions and number of cheerleaders that can participate:

  • 1A - 12 cheerleaders

  • 2A - 12 cheerleaders

  • 3A - 16 cheerleaders

  • 4A - Small - Up to 16 cheerleaders OR

  • 4A - Large - 17 to 25 cheerleaders

Open Divisions include:

  • Small Team division - up to 8 cheerleaders (Meant for schools with small numbers of cheerleaders)

  • Co-Ed division - teams with one, two or more males.

    • Small division - 16 cheerleaders

    • Large division - 25 cheerleaders

  • Non-Stunt/Mount - 12 cheerleaders (no stunting is allowed)

OTHER OPTIONS AT STATE COMPETITION:

·        Stunt Groups: In addition to team competition, we offer a division called Stunt Groups. We have a division for 1A and 2A schools and a separate division for 3A and 4A schools. Stunt groups can have up to 5 members. The routine is performing stunts to music for up to one minute.

·        Sideline: In order to encourage participation we have a “non- championship” division for cheerleaders to demonstrate their sideline skills. This is designed for teams starting out and to allow participation by more cheerleaders who are not participating in the School Size or Open divisions. This routine lasts up to one minute. It should include cheers and chants, but will not be judged on stunts or jumps, just crowd leadership. There are 4 divisions 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A.
